Why I Do Not Use Drupal For My Website
|
|
|
The limitations of yesteryear are behind us now.
* Gone are the days of single source options to build our web creatives.
* No longer do we have to know extensive amounts of code to make a living on the Internet.
If a tool isn't straightforward and easy to understand the vast majority of people will discard it for some other online tool today. That's why, when I read an article today that stated people were swarming to Drupal for creating blogs and websites I took the time to check things out.
Sign-up and logging in was easy. As expected it required a confirmation via my Email address.
Upon logging into Drupal I felt like I stepped back into the days of DOS but with content instead of code. Their claim is that the program is very easy to use; my findings were that I couldn't even determine exactly where to start building my own web creation.
I did find the side panel giving me a variety of options from "create content" to "news aggregator." I anticipated that when I selected "create content" I would be handed a variety of tools for building a blog or website. Such was not the case.
I could do any of the following…
* Create a collaborative book page
* State a new forum topic
* Register an "issue" with Drupal
All nice features to be sure, but knowing how this information would produce a website similar to the one I run with or a blog like the one I own on Blogger.com remains a mystery to me. The only contact option available was through Email. Lack of timely support is one strike I hold against Blogger.com, but they have so many other advantages that their disadvantages are quickly overlooked. In my opinion this is not the case with Drupal.
In my opinion, even though Drupal has a Google PR7 and above if they are going to survive long-term their user interface needs to be dramatically improved. If that happens I will be glad to test Drupal for my website. What you do is up to you, however as far as the SEOGuy is concerned I cannot recommend Drupal until some major changes take place with their service.
