Setting Up Your Own Affiliate Program

The effectiveness of a good affiliate program cannot be ignored nor underestimate. It has shown wonders in boosting sales. The key however lies in setting up an apt affiliate program. Here are the options you should consider:

You have two options - Buy an affiliate tracking software or Employ an affiliate service provider/affiliate network. Which one you choose depends on what your answers are to these questions below:

  • Would you want to deal with affiliate administration jobs like signing check and sending check on time for each affiliate?
  • Accounting?
  • Do you have a budget to sign up high quality affiliates?
  • Would you have the patience to handle customer billing and billing enquiries?
  • Updating, maintaining software takes time. Would you still want to have your own?
  • Got confidence enough that gobble up some sign ups from your affiliates? Will they trust you?
  • Do you have a clue about affiliate fraud management?

If your answers to all of these are in the positive, then without the blink of your eye, go in for the option of buying your affiliate tracking software. You have to then plan your back-end administration jobs as well. The advantage of this approach is that there is a one-time fee to buy the software and install it. The disadvantage however is that you have to handle administration jobs like check preparation and etc. It is takes up quite some time and incurs administration cost. So if you have the ability, willingness and the resources, go ahead.

A good tracking software should maintain and update software for you, accurately keep track of affiliate's sales records, generate sales reports to your affiliates. It should follow an easy sign up mechanism so that you can recruit affiliates easily. It should let you customize your programs and there should be adequate build in security.

On the other hand, you have the second option, which is to employ an affiliate service provider/affiliate network. The nicest thing about this is that all the drab administration jobs and they incur the cost part of it. You don’t have to invest your time and money on it. If you can let a service provider handle your affiliate program, you can channelize your time and efforts on developing your e-business. The service providers are professional and so you can expect quality and no goof ups in services.

Now that both these options lay before you, it’s up to you to analyze what fits you best and make your choice. If you would love a sense of ownership and are willing to spend on resources for administrating the program, then own one. Else, hire a company that can do it for you while you invest more of your time and effort into business. A good choice is one that suits you, your nature of work and takes into other consideration other factors like priority, principle, time, money etc. Make a wise choice!
