How to Update Your Content—Automatically!

The key to having a successful website is to offer quality content. The Internet has rightfully been referred to as the Information Superhighway. Information is what makes the Web work. Surfers search for it; publishers create and provide it; search engines rank and categorize it. By providing the information that people want, your web business can become a success. Whether your online endeavor is based on Pay Per Click (PPC) programs or the sale of digital products, it is consistent quality content that drives traffic to your pages.
However, while good, or even great content is desirable, many times it is not enough. You see, not only should you create unique, premium content, you also need to update your content regularly for the search engine spiders to crawl regularly to assure good search engine placement. While this is a very effective (and necessary) strategy, it is also one that is quite demanding.
Writing good content takes time. And creating the same quality level of content on timely basis is not only difficult but also time-consuming. Duplicating this same effort for a number of websites would be a nightmare! If you spent all of your time and energy just updating your site content, how would you get anything else done? Isn’t there a way to automate this task effectively without losing the favor of the search engines?
If you’ve visited the websites of successful online marketers, you’ve probably seen some examples of how to do this without recognizing what was being done. After reading about a few of those methods below, you’ll not only see how content can be updated automatically, you’ll also know how to use these methods for your own content.
Most of the best-known marketers have one, but you’ve probably never guessed the real reason why it’s there. Of course I’m referring to an online forum. Forums that are dedicated to the needs and interests of particular target audiences are a great way to draw a number of that audience’s members to your site. By providing a forum you can invite visitors and subscribers to join. And once they do, they’ll have free reign to discuss the things they’re passionate about. There will be posts about their likes and dislikes. They will create posts about what’s happening in their particular niche. And thanks to your avid forum members, you will have a continuing flow of constantly updating content, and you won’t need to type a single word!
Another suggestion that’s also used by several top marketers is to hold a contest. If you’re looking for great content, consider offering a prize for the person who submits the most read article that best ties in to your website’s subject. This should encourage several people to send you articles that you could use as your own content. The key to making this work is to include in the contest rules a portion which states that all contestants agree that their entries can be published on your website as a condition of their inclusion in the contest.
A variation on the previous method is to create an article directory. To get an idea of how they work, do an online search for article directories. You will quickly come to understand how easily these websites are assured of a continuous supply of great content. Take the idea and put it to work on your own website. While your directory may be a poor comparison to the most popular ones, you will still have the means for creating a stream of new content!
You might also consider including a feedback manager on your site. For example, if you’re posting articles as content, you might want to include a way to enable your readers to leave their comments below a specific article. Simply stated, the article would serve as the source of additional content that will be added on a continuing basis by readers who choose to comment on the content you have posted.
For a truly automated approach, you’ll want to use RSS feeds. The term RSS stands for Real Simple Syndication. This is a technology that allows users to display specific files every time they are uploaded on a source website. For online marketing purposes, these RSS feeds can also be displayed on your web pages. To implement this strategy, simply download a few programs that will enable you to do this. Be certain that you get an RSS-to-HTML reader, so that the RSS feeds displayed on your pages can be read by the search engine spiders. Once you’ve set this up, then all you need to do is to subscribe to an appropriate RSS feed. Then whenever the source website posts new content, you can display the same new content on your own website.
