You’ve made the decision; you’ve taken the plunge. Yes, you are going to create an online business. After purchasing several products and reading scores of newsletters and blogs about making money online, you’ve decided that digital prosperity is the path to success for you!
But before you start building that website or choosing that domain name, or do any of a number of tasks associated with operating an online business, please do yourself (and your prospective subscribers and customers) a huge favor… Stop whatever it is that you’re doing (or are about to do) and take the time to figure out the answer to a question that is going to determine once and for all, the foundation of your business and what you’re going to do with it.
Here’s the question? “What do I sell?”
Now before you get all hot and bothered, let’s get a couple of things straight. First of all, if you’re going to operate an e-biz, more than likely you’re going to be selling Information Products. That’s not what we’re asking the question about, though.
And of course, if you’re even marginally serious about making a profit with your online business, you also have realized that you must sell something that appeals to and meets the needs of your target market.
Okay, back to the question. There are basically two responses, and the resulting business model you’ll be using will depend largely upon which one you choose.
You can choose to focus all of your energy and efforts on selling products created by other people. Many well-known online marketers have made an excellent living as an affiliate or Super Affiliate. Some have even created Information products about how to do this successfully.
Which leads us to the other option: selling products that you have created. There are several reasons why you should choose to sell your own products; let’s examine a few of them.
First off, there is the aspect of product promotion. By owning your own products, you can choose how to promote it. Not so with affiliate programs; that choice is determined for you. As a product owner though, you can choose to offer higher commissions and free product to e-zine owners and marketers with their own personal lists. This is a great way to get the ball rolling—and for creating future joint ventures.
Next, having your own products allows you to brand yourself. By choosing this route, you’ve created the means to get your name in circulation and for establishing an online presence. If your customers know you, and have known you for some time, more often than not they will choose to buy again when you either launch your next product, or recommend other peoples’ products.
Lastly, by creating and owning your own products you have a greater potential for credibility. Listen, it's much to convince others to make the purchase if you're launching your own products. Of course, they must be quality items. As a result, people will be more willing to trust you. And when that happens, they are also more willing to listen to what you have to say, which increases the likelihood of persuading them to buy your products.
