Don’t sweat if your marketing plans weren’t quite in place in the past year. There’s still hope, right? You could start doing things now to help you market more successfully in the future.

Review your past marketing strategies. Which ones worked for you and which ones didn’t? Which ones resulted in more clients, more sales and more growth for your business? Once you have analyzed this, you can eliminate all the strategies that didn’t give you any worthwhile results. There must definitely have been some form of marketing that you were all along even it wasn’t organized well. Find out the return on investment in these strategies so that you can delete the ineffective ones.

The most important aspect of marketing is tracking. You can track it directly or indirectly. For instance, you might have presented a seminar where someone walked up to you asking for your business card. When this person gets back to you to make a purchase, you know where the prospect is actually coming from. Indirect tracking is where this person refers you to a friend, who contacts you for an enquiry or purchase.

For every marketing activity that you undertake, you have to have a definite tracking plan in place. Did I get new clients, increased sales due this marketing activity? If yes, then quantify the same. How many new clients, how much increase in sales? At the end of this exercise for all activities, you will know exactly, and which strategy(s) suit your business best.

Document these findings. They will definitely come in handy while formulating future marketing strategies. It can also be used to determine the trend in marketing strategies that have worked well for you over a period of time. While deciding on the strategies for the next year, consider working around those strategies that gave good results last year.

Remember, any time you talk about your business in an event or phone through a brochure or any form of media, you are marketing. Even sending a thank you card or an email is marketing. Whenever you are talking to your current or potential customers, keep in mind that they are your customers. You want them to be on your good books at all times and vice versa. Grab every opportunity to spread awareness about your product, new ones if any etc.

Have an email signature that includes your name, phone number, email address, website address. You could even have your product tagline along with. If you believe that you have a wonderful product or service it will interest your prospects and solve their problems or add value to them, then you must share the word at every opportunity you come across. It is sacrilege to have a wonderful product and not market it. Do not demean the marketing function. Your success depends on your sales. Sales depend on your customers. The only way you can make your presence felt is by ‘marketing’. So market sensibly and watch your business soar!
