Perhaps the most unusual but highly effective cash generation technique of the past couple of years is the “One Time Offer” or O.T.O. While several of the best-known marketers have used it extensively, it isn’t quite clear who started the idea first.

In case you’re scratching your head, here’s a brief explanation of what an OTO is and how it works. In a nutshell, a One Time Offer is an additional offer that is made once the purchase process has been initiated. It is really not much different than what fast food restaurants refer to as a “suggestive sell.”

To achieve maximum effectiveness with an OTO, you will need at least three things:

  • The ability to create and upload web pages
  • An understanding of how to set up and run an autoresponder
  • A third party payment system or shopping cart systems

Now that you’ve got a basic grasp of what an OTO is all about and what it consists of, let’s examine a few different ways to set up a One Time Offer.

The most basic method is for those starting without a list. Create a free report that is uniquely yours and then spread the word about it via forums; putting the link in your forum signature is a good start. Then include your One Time Offer when they give you their contact information. Remember, it must be a quality item that should be related to your primary offer.

A second way to use an OTO is with an established list, like newsletter subscribers for example. Create your primary offer, and then at the point that the transaction is occurring, present another valuable offer. The primary offer could be a free report, a resale rights product or a Private Label Rights product.

You can create a twist to this method by finding a Joint Venture partner who has something of mutual interest. For instance, it could be a brand new product that he or she would like to do a One Time Offer for your customers or subscribers to purchase.

Lastly, one of the best-known is the multiple Joint Venture partner method. In this case you generally gather several JV partners to assist in a cross-promotion campaign. The OTO is controlled by software and participants are selected via invitation. You will find OTO’s like this used by well-known marketers as part of a new product launch. Some campaigns at this level will even include a second OTO, which oftentimes is a unique package consisting of products contributed or created by JV partners offered at a significant discount.
