Viral Marketing, The Professional’s Secret to Success

It doesn’t matter if you have a killer product or a perfectly designed website, if people don’t know even know that you exist! You will never achieve the level of success that you seek unless you first succeed in getting the word out about yourself and your product. And the key to doing this effectively is creativity.
You see, this aspect is not only vital in website design and product creation, it is also necessary in your advertising and promotion efforts. With the intense competition and rivalry among web-based businesses, it’s important to utilize every method available. But unless you include a healthy mix of creativity, even the most effective method won’t be as potent as it could be.
Among the vast arsenal of techniques and methods at your disposal are a few that are especially powerful when properly implemented. One of the best known—and often least understood—is Viral Marketing.
Although the term viral usually conjures up images of a dangerous virus, especially the mechanical variety dreaded by all computer owners, the way the term is used is different. In this case, you are not creating a virus for the purpose of getting the word out about your business. (In case you’re thinking about it, be warned; everyone has already had enough of spyware.)
Viral Marketing, better known as “word of mouth advertising”, is a marketing method often used to increase public awareness of a product or company. In most cases, several media avenues are used to reach out to the public without actually promoting the product. The campaign is able to succeed because it is carried along in a form that is easily transferable and is designed in such a way that each recipient is obliged or amused to pass it along to someone else. And as this happens, the product or company’s advertisement or message is also passed along with it.
The basic concept is the understanding that if people like the content of a specific media form, then they will most likely pass it along to their friends and family. Companies realize this fact and so they decide to sponsor a specific item, such as a cool flash game, funny video, or an amusing story or joke, which can easily be passed on to someone else along with the company’s brand, logo or product description.
Viral marketing has quickly become one of the most-used means of advertising and marketing for several reasons, with the main one being its relatively low cost. In the case of a viral marketing e-mail campaign, in order to avoid being labeled as a spam message, the marketer is counting on the willingness of the recipient to pass along the viral tool. If the recipient recognizes the name of the sender, the message won’t be blocked and stands a much better chance of being opened and read as well.
In order to make the campaign more effective, many companies include incentives such as discounts and rebates in the viral marketing piece. By creating an incentive that has a high-perceived value for the recipient, there is a much greater probability that the viral marketing piece will continue to be passed along. This is especially true when the recipient is permitted to include his or her business name, product name or message.
The main advantage of using viral marketing is that you can generate significant publicity and public awareness for your site or your company. And as a result, this increased traffic flow also offers a higher percentage of potential customers. Because this method has been so overused, to make it effective you will need a high level of ingenuity and imagination along with a killer incentive to keep the campaign active.
Viral Marketing is an excellent “stealth marketing” tool to inform people about you and your company. All it takes to get started is a great idea, an addictive game, or an outrageously funny story to get people to pass your advertising message along. This method has worked for several large companies: a classic example is Microsoft’s Hotmail. They were the first big company to employ this method and the results are continuing to this day. Find a way to create a unique “buzz” that will get everyone’s attention, and then attach your name, business name or product name to it. Include a compelling reason to pass it along and who knows, you might become the next viral marketing superstar.
