The Forgotten Element of Podcasting

It could be described as the hottest Internet craze since e-mail. And, like e-mail, it certainly appears that it is here to stay. Every day it seems like more and more people are starting their own or are listening to someone else’s podcast.
While the incredible convenience offered by this new medium is indeed a contributing factor, it is definitely not the driving force behind podcasting’s success. Nor is the fact that creating one is extremely easy to do. And, while the “time-shifting” ability is quite appealing, this too, cannot be considered as the key to the popularity of this “upstart” new medium.
So, you may ask, what is the “one thing” behind the amazing success of Podcasting? Simply put, it’s an interactive medium. Or, more specifically, an effective podcast is an interactive medium.
The bottom line, like it or not, is that a podcast is essentially a product. And a product only fulfills its purpose when it is properly designed for its intended audience. Thus, the more interactive the podcast, the more involved the audience can become.
Think with me for a moment about some of the most successful television game or talk shows. Without question one of the key reasons for success is audience participation. By encouraging audience participation you are meeting a need and creating ownership.
People watch game or talk shows because there is “something in it for them.” The same will hold true for a podcaster’s audience. Which means you have to find out what they want, and then give it to them.
And the best way to do this is to provide ways to interact with your audience. It could be through a variety of ways, including:
--Inviting listener comments
--Holding a contest
--Doing an online survey
--Asking listeners to contribute content
--Creating a quiz for your listeners
--Using a blog or website to cross promote
If you keep your audience in mind—and make your podcast an interactive one—not only will you be able to build your audience, but they will also be able to furnish you with the information you need to continue to create podcasts that are focused on meeting their needs and that give them what they want.
